When - Then

I used to get caught in the 'When-Then Trap'. WHEN... happens, THEN I will... Thinking that it was just a matter of time and then I would find my happily ever after. Somehow I would grow up and things would be great and never change.

Soon I found that every THEN... was followed by a new WHEN... and THEN... there was always another WHEN... and another THEN... when you get caught in the 'When-Then Trap'.

As time went by, the candles on the cakes increased, as well as all the opportunities and responsibilities of adulting. I moved from one WHEN... to the next THEN... and again from one WHEN... to the next THEN... until one day, WHEN I realised that I had to stop waiting for the next WHEN... the next goal, the next opportunity, and THEN I could focus on the present, the reality of the moment, the NOW.

Now I am well aware of the 'When-Then Trap'. Now I pay attention because NOW is the time to enjoy, NOW is the time to make things, change things, do things, NOW is the time to laugh and enjoy spending time with others. NOW!

Life changes like the seasons and we go in and out of seasons every now and then. Sometimes we miss the small beginnings, the joys of the present or the beauty of everyday, because we long for something far away that sounds bigger or better or different. Just to reach that far away dream and look back and realise that we are so much older and not as strong or as fast as we used to be.

There is a time for everything and everything happens in its time. We can decide what to do with our time, but we can't stop the effects of time passing. People live and grow up and grow older everyday.

Beware of the When-Then Trap. Ensure that you live your best life NOW. Do the things that you are good at NOW. Spend time with your loved ones NOW. Later, much, much later, WHEN you look back at your life, THEN you will appreciate the fact that you lived in the present, the NOW.
